In the world of scientific research, an intriguing collaboration is taking place, one that bridges the gap between human and canine health. The project, titled 'Where Science Meets Snouts', is an ambitious endeavor to understand chronic pain in dogs and, in turn, develop better pain management strategies for both dogs and humans.
The Need for a New Model
For years, rodent models have been the go-to for pain research. However, with a growing focus on reducing opioid reliance in human medicine, scientists are turning to non-rodent models that more accurately reflect human chronic pain. This is where dogs come into the picture.
A Unique Collaboration
Duke University's Canine Cognition Center and NC State University have joined forces, each bringing their expertise to the table. NC State conducts thorough medical assessments, evaluating emotional states and overall health. Meanwhile, the Cognition Center focuses on cognitive tests, assessing memory, problem-solving, and self-control.
Understanding Canine Pain
"Pain impacts more than just the physical aspect; it affects memory, self-control, and social relationships," says Vanessa Woods, a research scientist at Duke. "We're exploring how pain influences a dog's cognitive abilities, particularly in cases of osteoarthritis."
The study has enrolled 45 dogs, 22 with osteoarthritis, and the rest as healthy controls. The screening process is rigorous, ensuring only dogs with genuine pain issues are included.
The Power of Canine Models
Dr. Margaret Gruen, a veterinary behaviorist at NC State, highlights the advantages of canine models. "Dogs develop osteoarthritis naturally, often at a younger age, and the disease progresses similarly to humans. They live in our environments, breathe our air, and eat our food. They're an excellent model for understanding chronic pain."
Voluntary Participation
An interesting aspect of the study is its voluntary nature. The dogs must be willing participants. This ensures a stress-free environment, especially for dogs with a fear of medical settings. As Katarina Feetham, an undergraduate researcher at Duke, explains, "Separating cognitive testing from medical testing reduces anxiety and provides a more accurate assessment."
The Human Connection
Dr. Francis Keefe, a human clinical team member, brings a unique perspective. He's intrigued by the social aspects of pain, an area that's complex to study in humans. "Dogs may offer a better understanding of pain mechanisms and treatment development than rodents. The influence of owners on their dog's pain experience is an intriguing aspect."
Early Results and Future Prospects
The team is currently in the data collection phase, and early results are promising. The next step involves scaling up, with 250 dogs tested repeatedly, some receiving pain treatments and others placebos. The goal is to determine if cognitive and emotional markers improve alongside pain management.

"Dogs are an integral part of our families, and as they age, they deserve the best care," says Woods. "This research is a way to repay them for their unconditional love and ensure we're providing the best pain management strategies."
