On Monday, the team unveiled the statue in the left-field concourse of Globe Life Field in Arlington. The statue depicts Captain Jay Banks, who, in 1957, led a contingent of Rangers to prevent Black students from enrolling at Mansfield High and a community college. The image of Banks standing by as a Black figure was hanged in effigy above the school has become a symbol of the Rangers' controversial past.
Russell Molina, a board member of the Texas Ranger Association Foundation, acknowledged the complex history of the Rangers, stating, "While not everyone who has served lived up to the ideal, most did, and they deserve to be remembered for their service and commitment." However, this statement has not quelled the controversy.
Some argue that the statue represents the Rangers organization as a whole, not just Banks. The title of the statue, "One Riot, One Ranger," has multiple interpretations. According to author Doug Swanson, it originated from a Ranger's account of an incident in Sherman, where a Black man on trial was killed by a mob. The statue's presence at Globe Life Field commemorates the Rangers' involvement in stopping an unsanctioned prize fight in 1896, but it also serves as a tribute to all who have served the organization.
The statue joins others honoring baseball legends like Iván Rodríguez, Adrian Beltré, and Nolan Ryan. However, its controversial nature has sparked a call for context and a more honest portrayal of the Rangers' history. Swanson hopes the statue's installation will encourage a deeper understanding of the organization's past, stating, "Let's just be able to see the real history, the whole history."
