The UK isn’t alone in planning to bring home citizens stranded abroad. Here’s a snapshot of how different countries are approaching the crisis:
Australia
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia is in talks with airlines to assist the 115,000 Australians stranded in the Middle East. She added that evacuations will be difficult while much of the region’s airspace remains closed.
France
A French government official estimated about 400,000 French nationals are affected. Travelers have been urged to register with the Foreign Ministry’s Ariane system, and more than 25,000 have signed up so far.
Germany
Germany’s government indicated that the tourism sector would handle most of the roughly 30,000 Germans stranded in the area, with military repatriation seen as a last resort.
Italy
Italy’s first charter flight carrying 127 citizens who were stranded in Oman or had relocated there from Dubai landed at Rome’s Fiumicino airport late on Monday. Passengers credited the Italian embassy with facilitating their return.
Spain
Spain has begun evacuating its citizens from the Middle East, according to Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares on Tuesday.
United States
The U.S. Department of State urged Americans to leave more than a dozen Middle Eastern countries immediately on Monday, though it has not announced any repatriation flights yet.
