GBH News spoke with six of Dr. Alford’s patients, all of whom reported similar experiences of canceled appointments or an inability to schedule future visits. When they tried to reschedule, they were told it wasn't possible at this time. UMass Memorial itself has declined to offer a specific reason for these cancellations or to confirm if Dr. Alford’s patients will be referred elsewhere. However, they did issue a statement asserting their continued commitment to providing comprehensive gender-affirming care. They explained that while individual appointments might be canceled due to provider availability, their overall dedication to such care remains unchanged.
Dr. Alford herself has stated that she is unable to comment on the situation, adding another layer of mystery to the unfolding events.
And this is the part most people miss... Dr. Alford is not just any surgeon; she is the only surgeon in Massachusetts performing gender-affirming vaginoplasties outside of Boston. Since joining UMass Memorial in 2023, she introduced a cutting-edge surgical technique utilizing abdominal tissue and robotic assistance, a method previously unavailable in New England. Her patients describe her not only as highly skilled but also as incredibly compassionate, making a potentially daunting process feel more manageable. One patient, using the pseudonym Danielle, found Dr. Alford’s confidence and reassuring demeanor to be a significant comfort during this stressful time.
Hannah Garceau, another patient, is awaiting a follow-up procedure. Her January appointment was canceled, and a recorded conversation shared with GBH News revealed a staff member admitting, “I think there’s been some changes. So I’m not sure exactly what’s going on.” Hannah’s concern is palpable; she feels a deep connection with Dr. Alford, whom she credits with giving her a “new lease on life,” and is anxious about finding another surgeon for her crucial follow-up care.
The timing of these cancellations is particularly noteworthy, coinciding with federal efforts to discourage gender-affirming care, especially for minors. While Dr. Alford did not perform bottom surgeries on individuals under 18, some patients are concerned that UMass Memorial, having reported a significant operating loss, might be more susceptible to federal funding pressures. Chrissi Bates, an advocate and Dr. Alford’s first vaginoplasty patient, suspects that external pressures, rather than Dr. Alford’s own volition, are behind these cancellations. She voiced her disappointment, stating, “It’s really disheartening to hear that UMass is just caving to this unjust kind of healthcare agenda that’s being pushed by the Trump administration.”
Patients are yearning for transparency, hoping to understand whether they can follow Dr. Alford to a new institution or if they must embark on the arduous journey of finding a new surgeon. Kara Earp, whose April surgery was canceled, has already begun exploring options elsewhere but harbors the fear that other hospitals might also cease offering these vital procedures. She moved to Massachusetts specifically for this care and wonders, “If it is Dr. Alford being pushed out due to concerns from the Trump administration, who’s to say that’s not going to happen in Boston.”
